What Are Structural & Mechanical Ceramic Components?

Structural and mechanical ceramic components are advanced ceramic parts engineered to carry load, transmit motion, seal a joint, or hold precise geometry inside a machine — roles traditionally filled by hardened steel, bronze, or engineering plastics. They're specified when a metal or polymer part would wear out, corrode, deform under heat, or conduct electricity when it shouldn't.

Unlike ceramics chosen purely for their electrical or thermal behavior, structural ceramic parts are selected first for mechanical performance: compressive strength, hardness, wear resistance, and dimensional stability under sustained load or repeated cycling — while still delivering ceramics' native resistance to heat, corrosion, and abrasion.

Typical drop-in replacements:

→ Hardened steel bushings & bearings
→ Bronze or PTFE wear rings
→ Stainless valve seats & plungers
→ Tool steel dies & punches
→ Aluminum locating fixtures

Common failure modes ceramics solve: galling, corrosion, thermal creep, electrical leakage, dimensional drift.

Materials We Machine

Every component below can be produced in the material that best fits your load, temperature, and wear profile. Full material data sheets are available on request.

Al₂O₃

Alumina

High hardness, strong electrical insulation, the standard choice for general wear and structural parts.

ZrO₂

Zirconia

Highest fracture toughness of the technical ceramics — suited to parts under mechanical shock.

SiC

Silicon Carbide

Exceptional wear and corrosion resistance for seals, bushings, and fluid-handling components.

B₄C

Boron Carbide

One of the hardest engineering ceramics available, for extreme abrasive-wear environments.

Si₃N₄

Silicon Nitride

High strength and thermal-shock resistance for bearings and structural parts in demanding cycles.

AlN

Aluminum Nitride

Rare combination of high thermal conductivity with strong electrical insulation.

BN

Boron Nitride

Machinable ceramic with natural lubricity — useful for fixtures and low-friction parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tolerances can Microns hold on structural ceramic components?

On ground and lapped features we routinely hold tolerances to ±0.01mm, with surface finishes down to Ra 0.2–0.6µm depending on material and geometry. As-fired (unground) surfaces carry looser tolerances, which our engineers will flag when quoting your drawing.

Which ceramic material is best for a structural or wear component?

It depends on the load, temperature and environment. Alumina is the standard choice for general wear resistance and electrical insulation. Zirconia adds fracture toughness for parts under mechanical shock. Silicon carbide and silicon nitride are used where extreme wear resistance, thermal shock resistance, or high-temperature strength are required. Our engineers will recommend a material once they see your application.

Can Microns manufacture a custom component from my drawing?

Yes. Send us a DWG, STEP, or dimensioned PDF drawing with your material and tolerance requirements, and our engineering team will return a manufacturing quote, typically within 24 hours.

How fast can I get a quote or a sample part?

Our U.S.-based engineering team typically responds to drawings and RFQs within 24 hours. Sample and production lead times vary by geometry and material and are confirmed at quoting.
